Materials at a Glance


Station 1 – Mirror + Water + Light (refraction/reflection)

  • Transparent cup or bowl filled with water
  • Small mirror (fits into the cup/bowl at an angle)
  • Flashlight or strong directed lamp
  • White paper/surface to help students see the colours (recommended)

Station 2 – CD or Prism + Light Source (splitting light into colours)

  • CDs (one per group) and/or prisms (if available)
  • Flashlight / strong lamp or sunlight near a window
  • White paper/surface (recommended)

Station 3 – Water Spray + Sunlight (mini rainbow)

  • Spray bottles (filled with clean water)
  • Direct sunlight (outdoors or by a sunny window)
  • Optional: dark background (e.g., jacket/cardboard) to make colours easier to see

Classroom and Documentation Materials

  • Observation worksheets (drawing + short text, or differentiated versions)
  • Pencils and coloured pencils/crayons
  • Station instruction cards with pictures and simple step-by-step prompt
  • Clipboards (optional, helpful outdoors)

Safety and Practical Materials

  • Paper towels or cloths for spills
  • Table covers (optional)
  • A tray per station to keep materials together (recommended)
  • Hand-washing / cleaning wipes (optional)

Visual and Support Materials (optional but recommended)

  • Illustrated story / slides of “Mari the Little Scientist” (for Stage 1)
  • Rainbow pictures or short video as a backup if sunlight is not available
  • Pre-drawn rainbow arc templates (for students needing more support)
